The New Year’s Dive: The start of a tradition?

04-Jan / 1 COMMENTS

Activity: The New Year’s Dive

Date 2.1.2014

Place: Scheveningen beach

Temperature: 7 degrees and bloody windy

Water temperature: 7-8 degrees

What the…?

It all started with a book I took from a friend called 365 Leukedingendoen. The book basically gives you 365 ideas of cool and not obviously touristic stuff to do in The Netherlands. I’d like to mention here that I managed to give back the book to said friend, against my better judgment, and that contemplating theft doesn’t count!

The first thing on the 365 stuff to do list is The New Year’s dive. Now close your eyes, and imagine a herd of thousands of people running into the water of the North Sea in the cold morning of the new year, probably with a hangover after the drinking and partying the night before. Frightened? Excited? Inspired? The image in my head gave way to all these emotions. I thought being a part of that experience must be a powerful thing. I looked it up and realized you had to register and that the deadline had already passed… so no for running as part of a stampede into the sea, but how about making the dive on a smaller scale with close friends?
