ADMIRATIONI

18-Jun / NERD ALERT! / 0 COMMENTS

Some weeks ago, when I wrote about Quintilian’s suggestion on how to express “ADMIRATIONI”, with Austin’s take on it as well as my own, I promised you all some gifs. Today I’m making good on that promise- only it won’t be in the form of gif, rather in good old short videos! I was a bit excited about creating a gif for the first time, but when I actually went for it, the lack of frames and fluidity was taking away from the clarity of body language as a whole. So my debut as gif maker will have to be postponed for another time.

I made five videos. Why five, when I only mentioned three (the modern “LAMA MA KARA”, and two others to illustrate “ADMIRATIONI”)? The reason is that I made two extra videos in costume. I believe that experimenting with historical body gesture while wearing the garb in which/ for which it was intended adds a whole other value and meaning. Plus, I can’t say no to trying out clothes đŸ˜‰ So here, without further ado, are my five experiments:

A short video illustrating the modern Israeli gesture of “LAMA MA KARA”/ “WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING”.

A short video illustrates my interpretation to Quintilian’s advice on how to express wonder from Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria 11.3.114, 112, 100-01

A short video illustrates Gilbert Austin’s interpretation for “ADMIRATION” as it is described in his book “Chironomia”.

Let me know what you think in the comments bellow! Did you like the videos? Did you find them helpful? Is there any historical gesture you find weird (more than reason) that you’d like me to dig into, or even make short videos like the ones above? I’d really like to know. Till next time!
