2020 has turned the world upside down. It’s been rough in so many ways. There has been so much loss. Some of us lost loved ones, some of us lost a source of income, some of us lost a way of life. There was, and still is, a lot to take in and process- from grief, to fear, to longing.
A bit before summer, while I couldn’t teach in person, let alone perform, I found myself going back to a home recording of Mozart’s An die Freude K. 53/47e, I did in November with Earl Christy. An die Freude was always one of my favorite songs. Its simplicity and clear message, of finding peace of mind or happiness amidst the storm and the noise, was always a sweet notion. This year I needed that message like a mantra.
Maybe just to keep myself busy, or maybe to feel like I can manifest the song’s message, I turned into some video editing. I am not a video editor by any means, but YouTube was a great source of information as to the necessary steps to create something one can call a video. I searched for the shots that seemed to link well with the need of a happy and calm place to go to and recharge. More than anything it gave me a creative outlet, in a time when so much uncertainty exists around being an artist and connecting to people in person.
