I was 15 years old and Omri Mor was my best friend. I went to see him play at an improvisation session at the restaurant by the Motza interchange, in the outskirts of Jerusalem. It went on for 3 hours on a Friday afternoon. Everyone knows Friday afternoons are a magical thing in Jerusalem.
That’s how I met Arnie. If I remember correctly Omri was there, along with Daniel Ran (Rein), a drummer and a double bass player. For 3 hours, they played intoxicating music that seemed like a good and intimate talk between great people. I was hooked.
Arnie was teaching at the International Center for Creative music, which he founded. The center was open to anyone and everyone. You could play and you could just hang around and soak it in. He taught by listening, playing and talking about music, by sharing and inspiring people to find more depths in what they already loved. I didn’t realize it then, but the generous way in which he communicated with people around him was and still is a rare thing.
This week on the 22nd meant 10 years without Arnie Lawrence, the beautiful musician and teacher.

we have very moving memories from that time…
I think that part of the teacher which he was, is also found in you
I was one of Arnie’s students in the late 1980s. He changed my life by breaking down all the walls that held my potential as a saxophonist. I will never forget him. I’m looking for “I HEAR A RAINBOW” and never found a copy. Does anyone know where I can access this film???
