If you know me, you’d know that I love presents of any kind, but this year when João asked me what I want for my birthday I had a bit of trouble answering. Don’t get me wrong, a girl knows what she needs- but that she can get on her own. For some years now, João and I have been giving presents to each other in the form of an experience. The way to go about it really is when the giver of the present can share the experience. So in the past couple of years, we got each other fun things like museum year cards, movie year passes, concert tickets and dance lessons- but this year’s present is the best by far. This year- I got to be a part of “MIME / Physical Acting” course at Studio MAPA Nederland!
I know, I know, when I think “Mime” the first thing that comes to mind is this worn out joke- “A mime is a terrible thing to waste”. However, when one actually goes past what we’ve been taught mime was by the popular media- it blows your mind. The level of strength and physicality of this art form, the precision and the technique, the risk taking needed, all help your body develop a vocabulary in which it can speak in a cleared way and communicate on a higher level with the public. The possibilities are endless.
Last Wednesday was my first time- and boy oh boy- I’m hooked. It was an hour and a half of nonstop movement- exercises that wake up every muscle in your body. Like saying good morning to every inch of yourself inside out. I sure felt it the next day… Some exercises were already given a meaning- or a scene: a fisherman throwing a net, a frog sitting on the edge of a well. It felt fantastic diving into motion that transformed me. It felt like being a kid- with all my focus on one single thing- in the room, present.

You reminded me of a great mime: Marcel Marceau (I hope I spelled his name right). Look for him at youtube and you won’t regret.
