January means exciting times, filled with many new beginnings. A week ago was my first performance with Pearls of the Opera, a programme of 45 minutes that consists of scenes from different known and loved operas.

While climbing slowly and steadily up the music world ladder, it’s really important for me to find my expression and my unique tools as a singer. Programmes like “Pearls of the Opera” are the perfect place to experiment with expression and staging. Singing on small stages, with the audience so close, makes every small movement count much more. Not having big sets, or any sets for that matter, puts the focus of telling the story through one’s body language and color of voice.

I am really lucky to have baritone João Luis Paixão and the pianist Ilil Danin on the “Pearls of the Opera” team. We’ve been working together for some years on different projects, which bring a rich background to the ensemble. I find it so easy to work with these guys because the communication is very fast, so much so that the audience is drawn in from the first instant. And indeed the audience was there with us on Saturday afternoon for every twist of plot and for every single laugh.
