One of the hardest things I have to do as a freelancer is saying no to a project. If you ever been your own boss, you might know this feeling. You have freedom to dictate your professional path to some extent, but along with that comes the great unknown of what tomorrow will bring. Which is a source of excitement, but can also be a recipe for many a sleepless nights.
So far I was fortunate to be able to say yes to many interesting projects, but once in a while comes a great project that saying yes to might sidetrack me from my artistic goals.
This is not to say that I always know what my goals are or how to achieve them, but I can say about myself that I see clearly what is not for me- or what will stir me away from being true to myself in the long run.
Somehow knowing what is not right to take on, doesn’t mean it’s easier to say no. You have to tread carefully and make sure you don’t offend people you respect, people that have invested in you and believe in you. Disappointing people feels pretty shitty too.
A great Korrepetitor of mine back in Jerusalem once told me- your path as a great artist will not be defined by what you say yes to, but by what you said no to. I find it to be true still today.
Stick to your path and know that it’s ok.
That’s great, thank you for this.
