THE TRAIN OF PASSION

“Thrice happy Genius, whose unrival’d name,

Shall live for ever in the voice of Fame!

‘Tis thine to lead, with more than magic skill,

The train of captive passions at thy will;

To bid the bursting tear spontaneous flow

In the sweet sense of sympathetic woe:”

By Robert Lloyd

The ACTOR. ADDRESS’D TO BONNELL THORNTON, Esq.

Our starting point working on Benda’s  ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ was most definitely the train of passions. The elusive and fragile progression of passions stands at the heart of this mythological tale. Before talking about action, or gesture, there is the mental state of the character. When that is clear it effects everything we do on the stage- the use of the voice, the glint in the eye, the movement and gesture.

Here are a few photos taken at one of our first run through’s of the piece some weeks ago. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

    Very intesive!
    I like the hidden smile of the first one most. Was it also a gesture for stage?

      Thanks! Yes, the passion at the base of each facial expression was our first step in building the acting style.
